Huh?

There are two adages that have captured my imagination in recent weeks:

1) The only constant in life is change.
2) The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Does this mean we could combine the two and say that the only constant in life is sameness? I'm pretty sold that this is the case. Maybe externally, things change (and they probably change more drastically as time passes), but the inner man has not changed since the beginning. We simply have more tools and toys to work out our sameness in new ways. People like to look around them and talk about how things change, but when we look inwardly, we're forced to admit that we resist change with all our might.

The change I'm talking about is fundamental change - not new wardrobes or new waist sizes. "Clothes don't make the man", right? I don't have any quick answers. We certainly didn't get into this shape overnight.
